Almost a year ago I researched and compiled a huge list of free PDF patterns from Indie pattern companies. I thought it was time to update this list, delete some links to patterns no longer available, and most importantly – add a load of new ones! If you have a favourite that isn’t in this list feel free to leave a comment, I am happy to host this as a living document that everyone in the sewing community is welcome to add to.

A lot of pattern companies that sell PDF patterns often release a free pattern so you can try out their brand before handing over any hard-earned cash! With the help of my lovely followers this is now a list of over 80 of the best freebie patterns. I have tried to only include pattern companies we know and trust. No weird websites or odd Pinterest links here. Only generous pattern companies who would like to offer some freebies to their customers.

I had listed them by pattern company in alphabetical order (did I mention I used to work in a library?!) but I don’t think that was super useful so I’ve completely reordered this list and separated it into categories: Tops, Skirts/Trousers, Dresses/Jumpsuits and Lingere/Accessories. I have linked to the specific place where you can get that pattern for free including the newsletter signup/Facebook group where necessary.

One final thing before we get to the list – if you see any patterns you like, I recommend you download them and save them somewhere safe. I’ve deleted at least ten patterns from this list that were free this time last year and aren’t available or free anymore. So if you like a pattern, grab it now!

TOPS

Amy Nicole Studios – Krissa Top is a super cute cropped shell top with a split back. Easy and free to download from Amy’s site.

Avid Seamstress – Drop Sleeve Top is free to everyone who signs up to the newsletter at the bottom of the page.

By Hand London: Polly Top is a sweet tank with interesting colour-blocking opportunities. Free to download from the BHL website.

Colette Patterns – Sorbetto Top is a lovely woven tank top with a bit of detail. Free to download from the Colette website.

Deer and Doe – Plantain Tee this great basic tee is free on their website. Just create an account and you’re done!

Elbe Textiles – The FREE Carine Tee is a cropped, scoop neck t-shirt designed for women. Elbe have also got a free t-shirt designed with men in mind – the Sage Tee.

The Foldline – Hello Sailor Top this lovely woven top is free when you sign up to the Foldline.

French Navy Now – Stellan Tee is a brand new free boxy t-shirt pattern available to download for free straight from the French Navy Now website.

George and Ginger –  Sincerely Sawyer Sweater If you join the George and Ginger Pattern Group on Facebook you get half the discount code and you get the other half of the code from the Sincerely Rylee Facebook Group. This is a bit of hassle but there are loads more free patterns in the files of the G&G Facebook group anyway including – the Lovesick Bra, I Heart You PJs, Thankful Top, Bonus Tank, All Wrapped Up Sweater, Effortless Cowl Poncho and the Anniversary Top!

Grainline Studio – Hemlock Tee is a one-size tee which is free for all Grainline Studio newsletter subscribers.

Halla Patterns – Agnes Swing Top and Dress for Women / Slim Dolman / Stardust Tank for Women all of these patterns are available for free to anyone who joins the Halla Patterns Facebook Group – they all have discount codes listed in the pinned post to get these patterns for free.

Hey June Handmade – the Durango Tank is a knit tank top, free if you create an account and download the pattern from the website.

In the Folds – Emily of In the Folds has been designing free patterns in collaboration with Peppermint Magazine for a couple of years now. The sewing school webpage has loads of gorgeous patterns so I’m only going to mention a few for each category on here, I highly recommend checking them out and having a look through the full list! Great top patterns include: the Peplum Top,  which I have made and really loved! There is also the  the Ruffle Sleeve Top and the Slouchy Cardi as well as lots more!

Itch to Stitch – the Uvita Top and Lago Tank, are available to download for free on the Itch to Stitch website.

Jalie Patterns – the Yoko Square Roll-Neck Top is a boxy shape with a high roll neck. Add it to your cart and it shows as free. Then just check out and pay nothing!

Love Notions – Laundry Day Tee is free if you join the Love Notions Pattern Support Facebook Group and get the discount code to get the pattern for free.

My Handmade Wardrobe – has a lovely free simple t-shirt  pattern absolutely perfect for any knit fabric beginners and free to download from their website.

Patterns for Pirates – Avast A Circle Vest and the Tulip Tee and lots more are listed in the Freebies section of the website. Just create an account and download what you like!

Sarah Kirsten – Offers the Morning Glory top for free if you enter your email address. It’s a really cute open backed top with a tie detail!

Seamwork – York Top – you need to create a free Seamwork account to get this pattern but it’s easy and quick to do!

SecondoPiano – Basic InstincT this is a fab basic t-shirt pattern which comes from Sasha of SecondoPiano. I have linked to the fab blog post where you can get the pattern and Sasha talks all about garment workers’ conditions and organic cotton – a great resource for anyone interested in sewing more sustainably.

Striped Swallow Designs – Cloud 9 tee looks like a really great basic and has come highly recommended!

Swoon Patterns – Scarf Neck Cardigan is free to download from the website. I have made this twice and really like it. It’s comfy and looks great! If you are interested in bag making, while you are there on the site you should also check out the other free patterns as there are a lot of bag patterns for free too!

Tessuti – Mandy Boat Tee is a stylish tee that’s popular among makers on Instagram. There are also a bunch of other lovely top patterns on the free pattern area of the website including Athina Top, Monroe Turtleneck, Zoe Top and Our Fave Top.

Wardrobe By Me – Hera Wrap Top is a cute little wrap front top with floaty sleeves, available to download from the website.

SKIRTS/TROUSERS

Elbe Textiles – Lawley Skirt is a beautiful gathered skirt I have made myself and absolutely loved. It has a gathered waistband for comfort and lovely big pockets – basically the only gathered skirt pattern you’ll ever need.

Halla Patterns – Sleep Shorts and Twirly Girl Skirt for Women are available for free to anyone who joins the Halla Patterns Facebook Group – they have discount codes listed in the pinned post to get these patterns for free.

Hey June Handmade –  The Mountain Pose Pants are now just free to download from the Hey June website (last year you needed a code – thanks Hey June!)

In the Folds – Emily of In the Folds has been designing free patterns in collaboration with Peppermint Magazine for a couple of years now. The sewing school webpage has loads of gorgeous patterns so I’m only going to mention a few on here, I highly recommend checking them out and having a look through the full list! The recently released Wide Leg Pants have been hugely popular! And they also have this cute Vintage Style Skirt.

Itch to Stitch – the  Lindy Petal Skirt is available to download for free on the Itch to Stitch website.

Lila and June – Wrap Skirt is a lovely simple skirt pattern that I think would show off a print beautifully. Free to download from the website.

Patterns for Pirates – Peg Legs, Peg Legs Maternity, Peg LegsAdd Ons, Pirate Pencil Skirt, the great Unisex Walk the Plank PJ Bottoms and lots more are listed in the Freebies section of the website. Just create an account and download what you like!

PurlSoho – City Gym Shorts are a simple but pretty shorts pattern that I definitely plan to make. There are loads of other free patterns on here too so it’s definitely worth a look!

Ready to Sew – Justine Skirt is a gorgeous button-up skirt with huge pockets, what’s not to love?! This is high on my to-make list! Free to download from the Ready to Sew website.

Rebecca Page – Betty Vintage Circle Skirt is free. There are also a bunch more free patterns on the site so it’s worth a browse!

Tessuti – Libby A-Line Skirt is a simple skirt that looks cool and easy to make. There are also a bunch of other lovely top patterns on the free pattern area of the website.

DRESSES/JUMPSUITS

French Navy Now – The Orla Dress is a gorgeous dress that is a blogger favourite. Free to download straight from the French Navy website.

Sewalicious – Rose Tunic or Dress is available to download for free once you’ve added it to cart and registered for an account.

Untitled Thoughts – Louise Wrap Dress is one of the most recent additions to this list and it’s a knockout! Easy to download the pattern pieces from the website and then follow the sew-along for the instructions.

LINGERE/ACCESSORIES

Closet Case Patterns – have a free sewing machine cover pattern and also a DIY Floor Pouf tutorial which looks like an amazing scrapbuster!

Elbe Textiles – the Sorrento Bucket Hat is free to download from the website.

Jennifer Lauren Handmade – the Tailor’s Ham I featured in my blog post and the Harvest Apron are both free and easy to download from the website when you create an account.

Kylie and the Machine – the Ida Clutch is a gorgeous little clutch bag seen all over Instagram which is available to download for free on the website. I’ve made this myself and can confirm it’s a great pattern!

Madalynne Intimates – the Sierra, Mallori Lane, Barrett and Noelle bralettes are all listed under a free pattern section of the website.

Measure Twice – Darcy Boxer Shorts are a mens woven boxer short pattern which look great!

Megan Nielsen Patterns – Acacia Underwear is free if you sign up to the Megan Nielsen Patterns newsletter.

Milan AV-JC – Uamep Origami Bag, I’m not adding tons of bag patterns on here because I feel like there are loads out there and this already huge list would be twice as long. But I am a sustainable sewist as much as possible so how could I not mention this cool zero-waste bag pattern?! I’m definitely going to be trying this!

Paper Theory – Stevie Knickers were designed to be a perfect scrap buster. Available for free after joining the Paper Theory Mailing list.

SoZo – Free Pants and Vest patterns are available to download for free from Zoe’s blog.

Stitch Upon a Time – I have already written a whole blog post about the Midnight Slippers Pattern but wanted to mention it here anyway. To get the free pattern you need to join the SUAT Facebook Group and download it from the files area.

Tilly and the Buttons – Snuggly Slipper Boots are free to download from the Tilly blog.
